icon-play Vancouver In Winter With Snow / Information for Rent, Job Hunting, Film School & Art Activities
I will mention about how to find a house and job in Vancouver.
Vancouver, this is the place of beautiful nature + city buildings are mixed together in a good balance. In the summer nice weather make people want to go outside, but in the winter raining a lot that time make people want to stay in inside.
I came back to Vancouver from Kelowna to see film schools and to find some job. I took many actions here again. I went to a famous film school, moved houses 3 times, and successfully I got one job.
This is the record of my second Vancouver life with artistic photos that I took!
The reasons why I came back to Vancouver, BC
About a half year ago,,,
In June 2016, I had been in Vancouver only for 1 month. I came up there alone with heavy bags, and stayed at a local host family. For 1 month, I focused on studying about creating website just by myself, and then I made this my travel photo blog website “WHATiC.SPACE” at the time. Yay!
It seems I got a good start, but I actually could not like the city much. Well, I wanted something NEW, but I realized that cities are always not much different in any countries. Expensive to live, many people, cars and buildings, businesslike host family, and also I felt some clearly racial discrimination… Anyway, I left Vancouver and headed to Gabriola island, to do farm stay, to be in nature, to be in different world that I’ve never been before. (Then I will start to have a great travel from Montreal to Alaska.)
You may think
“Why did you come back to Vancouver again?”
Yes I have some reasons why for the question
|(1)||To find a job. (to get some earn from local business as for money & new experience).||→ There are more opportunities than other county side cities.|
|(2)||To have a look film school & professional film production.||→ Vancouver has a few famous film schools.|
|(3)||To do some art activities (drawing & photography)||→ There are more opportunities than other county side cities.|
|(4)||To pick my suit case up.||→ I left my heavy suit case at a relative’s house before I started to be a backpacker.|
To accomplish the tasks, I took some actions…
How to find a house in Vancouver, BC
Before I started to do job hunting, I tried to find a house. I have stayed 3 houses in almost 1 month and half. (nomad like!) I stayed a house temporally, and move to the next one, again and again. Now I’m kinda settled in a house now.
For finding a house, the internet is the biggest tool.
I would share the website that I used for finding house in Vancouver.
You can stay at local house with local people. You just need to pay on online, so no need to pay to the owner hand in hand. Easy to find one, and you can book just by click the “booking”. Usually it’s good for short ~ middle stay. First I stayed at very cheap Airbnb share house for 4 nights. ($16/per night) Then I was looking for a place to stay for longer. There is a Discount Coupon!
You can do home stay at local house with local family. You need to pay the booking fee on online, also you need to pay to the owner hand in hand for staying fee. Easy to find one, but you need to contact the family and asking for the possibilities & greeting first. Before I came to Canada I use this website and I did home stay for 1 month ($900/per month with food). As homestay I highly recommend you to book maximumly for 2 weeks first, because you will never know that you will like the family and place without staying experiences. When the family was not good for you, everything is going to be shit time..!
It’s the biggest website for classified in North American continent. There are many information of houses with contact information of the owners. If you find an interesting one, you might need to contact the owner for any questions. I found a place that I’m staying now by this website. It’s one of the biggest website for classified in North American continent. It’s the same way to find a house as Craigslist. I visited one house to have a look from this website. I didn’t like it, so I didn’t contract with the house’ owner. / Visiting a house is a highly recommendation before you contract!
It’s a Japanese website for people who can read & write Japanese. I found a place here, and stayed the house for 1 month. The house was really comfortable one. ($500/per month) / Visiting a house is a highly recommendation before you contract!
It’s an amazing volunteer community. Great for a short stay. You can stay at a local house as FREE. People who joined the community let travelers stay in their houses. You need to make your good profile and contact with host gently. You also can be a host for travelers in your place. I have used this community a lot when I was backpacking, and I’ve met awesome people indeed. Free and awesome people. yay!
- I saw really horrible dirty places when I visited some houses, and met a not nice person who seems do not care other people at all. Please visit the place that you are interested before you contract with the house owners if you use “Cragislist” “kijiji” and “Jpcanada”.

How to find a job in Vancouver, BC / Working Holiday
(1) To find a job. (to get some earn from local business as for money & new experience)
The Job Hunting Scheme
Research & Find → Submit Resume → Interview → Contract!
There are 2 ways to find a job.
- Dropping Resume
- Using The Internet
icon-star I got a job by “1. Dropping Resume”.
・I dropped about more 10 resume
・I spent for about 2 weeks.
I walked downtown area, and I dropped my resume to shops, cafes, and bars what I felt cool if I could work there. Some shop sometimes put a paper written like “NOW HIRING!” on the wall. It means they need a worker, so there is higher potential to get a job. Do not miss it.
Of course, you can drop your resume a place that doesn’t put the paper on the wall. I actually got a job at a cafe that did not put the paper on the wall..! I was like “Hello~, is a manager here today? do you think you are hiring now? May I drop my resume~?” something like that.
I guess the important things for getting job are timing & luck.
icon-rocket The most important thing for job hunting is having fun!
It is not easy to get one, some people spend for over 1 month, and could be stressful, but it is also very fun and cool experience. I had a fun for doing it, it was like a playing super real computer game! Walking around by own foot on stress that I’ve never been before in a new city. Finding pretty cafes and bars, and meet new people for dropping resume. Sometimes get free coffee or tea.
“2. Using The Internet“ is very common to find a job in Canada.
I would share the website here!
It’s the biggest website for classified in North American continent. There are many information of jobs hiring information with contact information of the owners. If you find an interesting one, you might need to contact the owner, and send your resume. I used this website to look some job information, but I didn’t find a good job for me.
It’s one of the biggest website for classified in North American continent. It’s the same way to find a house as Craigslist. I used this website to look some job information, and found a few good jobs and I applied. (I didn’t get a job from there tho)
It’s a Japanese website for people who can read & write Japanese. There are many jobs for Japanese speakers, such as Sushi bar, Japanese restaurants and bar…so on. I could not find a good job for me. I just felt maybe I should try to work in not Japanese environment for new experience.
Print Out location information
All free! Once you free resist there, you can use computers as free and the internet, also free to print out for 10 papers for 1 day. I used to go there a few times to get printing out resume.
→ For resister you just need to write your name, phone number, address and passport number.
Vancouver Public Library
Libraries are everywhere in Vancouver. Free to register & get a library card. There are free wifi, you can get the password once you resisted. You can print out there too. (20 cent for print-out, 5 cent for copy) I went there once or twice and printout resume.
→ For resister you just need to write your name, phone number and address. You also need to show your ID, Visa and address certification.
Vancouver Film School Tour / Positive & Negative Side
(2) To have a look film school & professional film production.
I went to a famous film school “VFS (Vancouver Film School)” in downtown to have a look and feel the professional film production atmosphere. I even did not make any appointment and reservation to have a look the school tho, the stuffs gave me a school tour gently.
As a consequence,,,
→ I would say Not now, Not here! Too expensive for me!
What I knew
icon-smile-o Positive side
- Can have “connections” with professional people
- Only 1 year program / Can be a professional quickly
- Can learn many things with brand new amazing facility
- The 3D animation skills are one of the best around the world
→ Students go to school only for 1 year, and there are sooo many tasks, home works, assessments and great opportunities to make own films in a wonderful professional environment and can make connections with professional people to make all students as high skills professionals by 1 year. The environment was yes absolutely great… so big space and many brand new machines and facilities! I could not stop say “wow” when I entered new class rooms in each times.
icon-frown-o Negative side
- Cost a lot for school fee
- No engagement for getting job after graduation
- Vancouver is not the best place for film production (used to be much better place)
→ It really depends on schools and classes, but the school fee for film production was $53200 for 1 year. For me I need more money to rent, food, and so on… so I would need minimum more than $65000..! oh no! And there is no engagement for getting job of film production. More than 60% of students can get in film productions so far.
→ I guess if you have money enough and wanna be a professional as soon as possible in Vancouver film production, it will be good one. The facility was amazing indeed, you should visit there once if you are interested. But for me I cannot pay for it. Well if I borrow money I could go, but I felt if I have the amount of money and time I would like to use to do other things like travel all countries or go to other school! So I just stopped thinking to go to film school in Vancouver so far. There are more film schools around the world (not only film schools). In the future, if I have met some school that I really wanna go even I need to pay any risks, time and money I would go.
Art Activities in Vancouver, BC
(3) To do some art activities (drawing & photography)
icon-heart “The people” love art & leniency to art.
Montreal is the best place for art in Canada, but Vancouver is good one for art stuffs too. There are artistic things, shops, cafes, galleries and in the city. And there some famous art museums and school too. Many good local artists are living in Vancouver too.
There is a good art business market and some communities.
= Vancouver is a good place for people who want to take some action for art.
There are some shops that can sell your own arts stuffs!
These days, I am making some art & planing to take some actions for art activities (photography and drawing) here. I will write about when I made it. Check it out in the near future!
(4) To pick my suit case up.
I got a heavy big suit case back that my relative had it for me.
One thing the most regret thing is that I brought too much stuffs. I really did not need the things much. I realized that I can live with things that can be in only 1 big backpack and 1 middle back pack thorough backpacking travel…
“People do not need much things to live.”
Oh! on the other hand there is a positive things too!
When I opened the suit case like for the first time in 3 months, I remembered my home country and felt like I was in my home. I got bit mystery emotion. And I felt so good for waring the clean bit formal cloths that were sleeping in the suit case, and walking around in downtown for job hunting.
